How it works
ZShape is a radiofrequency device that targets the deep layers of the skin, prompting collagen fibers to contract. The medium and large handpieces add a vacuum function that stimulates metabolism, blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. Surface electrodes and the vacuum-chamber electrodes deliver the RF energy evenly across the treated area and to the intended depth; Zimmer describes the combination of RF and vacuum as the driver of treatment results.
RF frequencies
1 MHz (Italy), 2 MHz, 4 MHz
RF intensity
1 to 20, adjustable directly on the handpiece
Vacuum modes
Constant vacuum or 3 pulse modes, 10 vacuum levels
Handpieces
3, sized small, medium and large
Device weight
30 kg

3 handpieces, 1 pack of 50 filters, 1 contact lotion
Why this system
Radiofrequency for body contouring
ZShape works by radiofrequency, one of the four mechanisms Zimmer offers for body contouring: ZStim works by electrotherapy, ZWave Pro by shockwave and ZTone by inductive therapy.
Two variants
Zimmer records ZShape as available in a Medical and a Non-Medical variant.
Visible after the first session
Zimmer states that the effects on wrinkles and fine lines are typically visible to patients after their first treatment.
Non-invasive, no needles
Treatment uses electrodes that glide over the skin; Zimmer describes ZShape as a completely non-invasive method.
What to know
Practice value
ZShape and ZStim, Zimmer's electrotherapy device, both target body contouring and both come in Medical and Non-Medical variants.
What does ZShape treat?
Body contouring, through radiofrequency.
What is the difference between the Medical and Non-Medical variants?
Zimmer publishes both variants but does not publish what separates them. Ask us which one fits your scope of practice.
Is ZShape the same as ZWave Pro?
No. ZWave Pro is a shockwave device. ZShape works by radiofrequency. Both are Zimmer body-contouring systems, through different modalities.
How is an abdomen and hips treatment structured?
In Zimmer's published Ask the Expert material, Dr. Margulies divides the full abdomen with the hips into three zones, around the umbilicus, an upper zone and a lower zone, at 10 minutes per zone or 20 minutes in total once the efficiency temperature is reached, then 10 minutes per side for the hips. He gives 40 minutes for the abdomen and both hips together.
Does every abdomen treatment include the hips?
Not necessarily. In the same Zimmer material, Dr. Margulies says the choice depends on the patient's morphology and the distribution of fatty tissue.
Does the frequency choice depend on the tissue being treated?
In the same material, Dr. Margulies recommends changing the suction mode every 2 minutes per zone, and choosing the RF frequency by target depth: 1 MHz for a deeper effect, often sought on the abdomen, or 4 MHz where the skin is sagging.
